ASICS, le développement produit de la Resolution 8
TennisAddict a voulu en savoir un peu plus à la suite des premières infos données par Asics lors du lancement de la nouvelle Gel Resolution 8 !
Voici l’interview de Rene Zandbergen, en charge des produits tennis et innovation chez Asics Europe. (English version below)
– Quel était le principal objectif de performance pour cette nouvelle édition ?
Notre objectif était de concevoir la chaussure la plus stable pour les joueurs de fond de court. Mais sans sacrifier la souplesse et la rotation dans les bonnes directions. Ce type de joueur se déplace le plus souvent le long de sa ligne de fond de court, et cela nécessite des maintiens, latéral et médian, optimaux.
– Comment mesurez-vous la performance, quels sont les types de tests (labo ou sur le court) ?
Nous avons un centre dédié unique au monde au Japon, l’ISS (Institute of Sport Science) où nous pouvons absolument tout tester :
– des laboratoires avec des caméras ultra-rapides, des plaques de mesure de pression, des tests de durabilité des matériaux…
– des terrains adaptés à l’ISS (mais l’on peut également aller sur d’autres courts avec un équipement mobile).
Cela nous permet d’acquérir toutes les données de performance pour les chaussures et le textile dont nous avons besoin.
Par exemple, on détermine si une chaussure est plus stable ou permet au joueur d’être plus rapide sur changement de direction, contrepied, si le centre de pression interne se déplace de la manière souhaitée dans la chaussure…
– Comment classeriez-vous votre ligne de chaussures actuelle : Resolution, Speed, Court FF ? Avez-vous une sorte de matrice avec la durabilité, l’amorti, le maintien et l’adhérence ?
Pour simplifier, nous avons identifié 2 types de joueurs :
1 – les joueurs de fond de court, ceux qui restent proche la ligne de fond, et se déplacent de gauche à droite. Comme expliqué, ils ont besoin de stabilité et maintien au milieu du pied, surtout latéralement. Gaël Monfils en est l’exemple parfait ! C’est à eux que s’adressent la nouvelle Gel Resolution 8.
Elle intègre :
– la technologie Dynawall qui offre davantage de maintiens, latéral et médian
– le système Dynawrap qui, lui, optimise la stabilité du coup de pied une fois les lacets serrés
– une semelle intégrale dont l’adhérence et la stabilité sont maximisées sur toute la longueur
Dans cet esprit, nous avons également d’autres modèles : Gel Challenger et Gel Dedicate.
2 – les joueurs tout terrain qui se déplacent sur l’intégralité du terrain, avec davantage de montées au filet, d’aller-retours gauche / droite. Ces joueurs recherchent plus de souplesse et de légèreté.
Notre modèle haut de gamme, porté par David Goffin, est la Gel Solution Speed FF. Sa semelle n’est pas d’un seul tenant, permettant d’accroître la souplesse et d’alléger l’ensemble de la chaussure. L’amorti est assuré par une semelle intermédiaire extra-légère Flytefoam. La technologie Twistruss permet des relances dynamiques et de trouver le bon compromis entre stabilité et souplesse dans la zone médiane du pied.
Asics propose également pour les joueurs polyvalents les Gel Game mais surtout les Court FF 2.
Ce modèle, tout en haut de notre gamme, est développé et porté par le n°1 mondial Novak Djokovic. Nous lui avons demandé de définir quel type de chaussures il souhaitait, et il a mis l’accent sur la polyvalence et la possibilité d’avoir le meilleur des 2 mondes ! Stabilité et flexibilité. Le Court FF 2 intègre ainsi une construction Mono-sock (chausson améliorant le support du coup de pied) et Twistruss évoquée plus haut.
– Revenons à Gaël, en quoi a-t-il participé au développement de la Resolution 8 ?
Chez Asics, c’est notre culture de travailler avec les sportifs de haut niveau. C’est ainsi que notre fondateur Kihachiro Onitsuka a commencé d’ailleurs.
Gaël a commencé à travailler sur la Resolution 8 dès le départ. Notre premier RDV était à Shanghai pour discuter sur les améliorations possibles de la version 7. Nous avons ensuite débuté le développement et nous nous sommes revus à Roland-Garros. Sur place, Gaël a effectué des tests sur les courts, mais aussi en dehors grâce à notre labo mobile. Nous avons ainsi pu analyser sa capacité d’accélération et de freinage ! Puis, RDV à Londres, pour finaliser les derniers détails, peaufiner au maximum ce qui peut l’être pour Gaël. Et depuis janvier 2020, il les porte sur le Tour !

What was your main goal for this 8th version?
Our main goal was to build the most stable tennis shoe for the baseline type of player without sacrificing flexibility and rotation in the right directions( A baseline player is most of the time during the game behind the baseline and moving from left to right because of this specific movement he is looking for a lot of lateral and medial support)
How do you measure the performance? What kind of lab tests do you use? What kind of on-court tests?
We have our Institute of Sport Science in Japan where we are able to test everything, going from lab tests(high speed cameras, pressure plates, material durability tests etc ) to on courts testing at our Institute of Sport Science but we are also able to test at other courts with mobile testing equipment. With all of this we measure the performance of our footwear and apparel. For instance if the shoe is more stable or helps the athlete to be faster after a turn or how much time is needed to break and turn, if the centre of pressure is moving in the right way inside the shoe and more.
How would you rate and rank your lineup : resolution, speed, court ff? Do you have a mapping of robustness, cushion, support, traction ?
We have identified two playing styles in tennis.
One is what we call the baseline player, and is about those players who play behind the baseline and moving from left to right. These players are after a shoe that offers stability especially at the lateral and medial side. For the baseline player we have our top shoe the Resolution 8 (worn by Gael Monfils) with our new dynawall technology offering increased support at the lateral and medial side, dynawrap system offering stability in the upper when pulling the laces and full length outsole which is all about increased grip and stability through full ground contact. In the same baseline range of shoes we offer footwear with increased stability with the Gel-Challenger and the Gel Dedicate.
The 2nd playing style is what we call the all-court playing style. This is a player who uses the whole court, running to the net and going from left to right. These players look for more lightweight and flexible footwear. Our flagship model for this playing style is worn by David Goffin and is called the Solution Speed FF and comes with a split outsole which makes the shoe more flexible and lighter weight. It also comes with a flytefoam midsole material which offers ongoing cushioning and is our lightest midsole material. The twistruss is also built for speed, creating the perfect balance between stability and flexibility in the midfoot area. In the all-court range of shoes we have next to the Solution Speed FF the Court Speed FF and the Gel Game all three items we focussed on lightweight and flexibility to answer to the need of the all-court player. That leaves us with the Court FF which is worn and developed together with the best tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic. When we worked with him we realised after listening to him that he was after the best of both worlds (baseline and all-court playing benefits) He wanted to have a mix of flexibility and stability and we offered that in the Court FF by using a special monoshock construction for improved upper support a new twisstruss offers the right balance between stability and flexibility and allows us to reduce weight by using a split outsole
How involved was Gaël Monfils in the development?
When our founder Kihachiro Onitsuka started our company he worked with athletes to make the best possible products and this is something we are still doing also with athletes like Gael Monfils decades later. We have been working with Gael Monfils from the start on the Resolution 8. Our first meeting was in Shanghai to discuss how we can improve the GEL-Resolution. After his feedback we got to work. We met again at Roland Garros in Paris where he tested on and off the court. We brought for instance special equipment to measure his acceleration and braking speed. Later that same year we met again in London to work on the final details, we still made slight changes at this point, perfecting every detail of the shoe for Gael, and he has now been wearing the GEL-RESOLUTION 8 since January of this year.
